While looking for artwork to decoupage onto candle jars, I serendipitiously found vintage covers of the French magazine, La Vie Parisienne .  Founded in 1863,  La Vie Parisienne was originally designed to appeal to the upper-classes, offering literary pieces, society gossip and articles about the arts.  It also featured the work of immensely talented artists like Georges Barbier , Gerda Wegener , Chéri Hérouard , Georges Léonnec , Maurice Milliere .  The artwork was considered risqué, even erotic (think early porn for the intellectual). I adore the work Chéri Hérouard did for La Vie Parisienne and wanted to share some of it with you.  I hope you find it as titillating as I do!

The French Love Breasts

Big, small, young, old, firm or flabby. The French are completely undiscerning in their love of the breast. They plaster boobs on posters in the Metro Stations. They sculpt firm and pointed breasts on their many statues. Even their history books are filled with images of their aristocratic ladies breasts. No matter where you go in Paris, you are assaulted by ta-ta's. Strolling down the Champs Elysees, I nearly collided with a life-size poster of a naked and boob-jiggling dancing girl at Crazy Horse, one of the popular clubs in town. At Luxembourg Gardens, former home of Catherine d'Medici, there are statues of the Queens of France lining the garden paths. Many of the queens are flashing a tit...or two! A Rainy Morning with a Master

It was one of those dreary days when gray flannel clouds blanketed the sky and errant raindrops pattered against my window, harbingers of the deluge that was to come.  The children were at school.  The dog was stretched out on the wood floor, her legs twitching as she no doubt dreamt of chasing seagulls on the lonely stretch of beach we often claimed as our own.  Though I had laundry to fold and manuscript pages to revise, the quiet house and approaching storm set a scene more conducive for reading than working.  With the the rain still pattering and the dog still twitching, I decided to abandon my tasks.  I grabbed a stack of books from my nightstand and took refuge upon the cushions of my favorite overstuffed toile chair.  At the top of my "To Be Read" stack was the slender biography  Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun: The Odyssey of an Artist in an Age of Revolution  by Gita May.  I looked ...
